The Dhak is a large membranophone percussion instrument originating from Bengal and Assam. Its shape varies from nearly cylindrical to barrel-shaped, and the methods of stretching the hide over the drumheads and lacing differ by region.
Traditionally, the dhak is suspended from the neck, tied around the waist, or placed on the lap or ground. It is played using wooden sticks, producing powerful rhythmic beats. The left side is specially coated to create a deeper, heavier sound.
Dating back to the medieval period, the dhak plays a vital role in Hindu religious festivals, especially within Sakta and Shaiva traditions, including Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Charak Puja. The energetic drumbeats, primarily performed by the Bengali Hindu community, accompany the arati (invocation dance) and are an essential part of Durga Puja celebrations unique to Bengal.
In Assam, the tea-tribes play the dhak alongside the nagara.Durga Puja is incomplete without the maddening, enchanting beats of the dhak—a large drum worn around the neck and played with two thin sticks, filling the air with frenzied rhythm and evoking the unmistakable sights and sounds of the festival.
