The Madal (Drum) is a traditional folk musical instrument of Nepal, mostly played during all auspicious occasions. It is a deeply rooted cultural instrument, traditionally used for singing, dancing, and musical gatherings.
This typical Nepalese drum-style instrument is considered the backbone of most Nepali folk music. The Madal is mainly used for rhythm-keeping and is the most popular and widely used hand drum in Nepal.
The Madal consists of a cylindrical body with a slight bulge at the center and is closed on both ends. These ends are commonly referred to as “heads,” with one head being smaller than the other. A strand goes around the waist of the player, allowing the instrument to be held horizontally.
The playing technique involves rhythmic striking of both heads using the palm of the hand. When struck, the heads vibrate to produce sound, creating rich and traditional rhythmic tones.
